First Flow

This Sycamore calabash bowl was my first experience turning green wood, created during a Matt Monaco training course in May 2025.

Inspired by the traditional calabash form, the bowl has a broad, rounded profile and flowing curve that continues beneath the piece rather than terminating in a prominent foot. A subtle decorative detail around the exterior provides a visual transition while allowing the simple form and natural grain of the Sycamore to remain the focus.

Working with freshly cut wood was an entirely different experience from turning dry material. As the bowl took shape, the wet Sycamore sent a vivid reddish spray from the lathe—one of my most memorable moments from the course. It was messy, fascinating, and a tremendous amount of fun.

The experience introduced me to both the character of green wood and the calabash form, making this an especially meaningful piece in my development as a woodturner.
