Joined by Craft

This three-piece furniture commission was created as a coordinated coffee table and pair of matching end tables. The coffee table combines knotty alder and pine, while the two end tables are constructed entirely from knotty alder. Together, the pieces were designed to share the same proportions, details, and finish while allowing the natural character of the wood to remain visible.

The construction was as important to me as the finished appearance. All of the structural connections were made using concealed loose-tenon joinery rather than screws. This creates strong, precisely aligned joints while allowing the craftsmanship behind the pieces to remain largely unseen. The only screws used in the completed furniture are those required to attach the drawer handles.

The knots, grain patterns, and natural variations found throughout the alder became part of the design rather than something to hide. The pine used in the coffee table adds another layer of character, while the consistent detailing and dark finish visually bring all three pieces together as a set.

Seeing the completed furniture in the space for which it was commissioned was especially rewarding. Joined by Craft represents the kind of woodworking I value—careful construction, attention to details that may never be seen, and furniture made to be used and enjoyed for years.
