Some pieces are a pleasure to work with from the start. This sycamore bowl turned smoothly on the lathe, giving me the opportunity to watch the beauty within the wood emerge as I shaped it. Flowing grain and warm color variations gradually revealed themselves, giving Stillwater its quiet character.

I left this bowl a little thicker to give it substance when held. I wanted it to feel comfortable and reassuring in the hands—a piece you would enjoy picking up and using every day. The broad rim frames the grain across the shallow interior, allowing the wood’s natural patterns to remain the focus.

The gently curved profile rests on a raised foot, giving the bowl a slight lift from the surface beneath it. Underneath, a series of concentric rings adds a finishing detail that reveals itself when you turn the piece over. Those rings helped inspire the name Stillwater, suggesting gentle ripples across a calm surface.

At 9¾ inches across and 1¾ inches high, Stillwater has a generous, open shape for serving crackers, nuts, or other dry snacks. It brings the warmth of natural wood to the table, whether you’re sharing with guests or enjoying an everyday moment at home.

Between uses, Stillwater is equally at home on display. Set on a coffee table, shelf, or sideboard, its broad rim and flowing grain offer something to appreciate from different angles. It’s a bowl made to be enjoyed both for its appearance and for the simple pleasure of holding and using it.
